Terry McMillan Thinks The Smith Kids Are Getting Pimped

Author Terry McMillan took to her twitter a few days ago to express her feelings on The Smith children who she believes are being pimped and exploited:

The Smith children already act like child stars. There’s an arrogance in their demeanor and behavior. I find it incredibly sad. It feels like the Smith children are being pimped and exploited. Or, they’re already hungry for fame. What about 4th grade?

A lot of A-list movie stars shielded their children from the Hollywood-world until they were old enough to decide. Look at those who didn’t. Look at Lindsay. Phoenix. To name but a few. They miss out on childhood. It’s more important than fame.

These kids don’t already know what they “love”. Total bullshit. They’re not prodigies. They think Hollywood is real.

Why don’t they do a remake of The Little Rascals and call it a day? Or, come up with an original film with some ethnic pride. Come on.

Okay. I’ve said enough about the Smith children. I’m not debating about them. It’s just my opinion. People can justify anything, though.

In 4th grade my son came home complaining that the kids in his school said I was famous and rich. I told him that was not true. That some of my books were popular but not everybody liked them. That we could afford a vacation. “Oh” he said, and went back & repeated it. I wanted him to think of me as his mother. He didn’t read any of my novels until he was 15. He only read 26 pages. Was bored.

Have a wonderful Wednesday everybody. I raised my son. I’m not wasting another minute worrying about how Will & Jada are raising their kids.

P.S. I loved the Karate Kid.

Black Mother Jailed For Sending Kids To White School District

At first glance i thought maybe i was tripping but as i began to read the story i thought "This is a textbook example of  racial-inequality and making an example out of the less fortunate." If you haven't heard the story here it is...

An Akron woman was sentenced to 10 days in the Summit County Jail, placed on three years of probation and ordered to perform community service after being convicted of falsifying residency records so that her two children could attend Copley-Fairlawn schools.

Summit Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cosgrove, who handed down the sentence Tuesday afternoon in a packed courtroom, ordered Kelley Williams-Bolar, 40, to begin serving the sentence immediately.

Williams-Bolar, who was standing before the bench with her lawyer, sagged into the arms of sheriff's deputies as she was led away, sobbing loudly, to begin her jail time.

After seven hours of deliberations, a jury convicted her late Saturday of two counts of tampering with records. To read the complete story (source)

What is Project Blaq and what prompted you to start it?

Project Blaq is a web platform designed to stream independent film and video content. I got the idea after talking to an independent filmmaker about online distribution options. I had always wanted to start a TV network, so I saw this as a perfect opportunity to combine the two.

What is your ultimate goal with Project Blaq?
My ultimate goal with Project Blaq is for it to become a top online destination for black film & video content.

Have you thought about how HUGE this could be for black films?  

As we talk to more and more people, it starts to set in. Although I like big picture thinking, I have to make sure I stay focused on the supporting details. I don't want to be so blinded by the bigger picture that nothing gets done.

What do you believe will be Project Blaq's biggest and smallest advantages? Why?

Every advantage is a big advantage! We have established relationships with key industry influences. This will be critical for getting the word out about submitting to the site

What inspires you to make this project big?

The scale of the project didn't hit me until we started to really uncover great content. As we stumbled upon across these films, we felt we had to work harder to bring these films to light. It was no longer just a business idea, is a way for filmmakers to push their content to audiences.

 

Who all is involved with this project? What was the discussion like pulling it all together?

I'm fortunate to have built my team with my CAU alumni family. After deciding to move forward with the project, I brought on Renay Nailon as my VP of Production & Content Acquisition. This was a major move because of Renay's creativity, passion and excitement about not only the project, but film making as well. She can literally watch indie films all day!

To support our business model, I brought on Oshanda Kittles as the VP of Sales & Marketing. She's a CAU alumna with an MBA in Marketing and years of corporate sales experience. She can monetize almost anything! I'm blessed to have this team because we have the perfect blend of creativity and business savvy.

 

Do you think actually going to college and studying film helps in the long run. Oppose to just jumping in head first and learning?

As an instructor, this is a question I get often. I will first say there is absolutely nothing wrong with jumping in head first. However, you must be willing to overcome a few challenges. The first is mentorship. By attending a film program you have an excellent way to interact with experienced professionals (your professors). They can guide you and offer you critical feedback on your work. By jumping in head first, you may or may not be able to find that mentor as quickly in such a tough industry. 

From an educator's perspective, a college degree is priceless (although Sallie Mae tries very hard to put a dollar amount on it, lol). The skills you learn while in college are vital. Outside of your major courses, college enhances your ability to think critically and analytically. My problem solving, research and reasoning skills were all sharply developed throughout my matriculation.

What are some misconceptions about black indie films and how does Project Blaq plan to conquer those misconceptions?

From my experience, people have a tendency to think that black indie films are always the extremely low-budget hood flicks that perpetuate violence and drug abuse within our community. This is so far from the truth! Our goal is not only showcase the very best in film & video  by black media makers, but also to connect them with a commercial audience. We want the younger generations to see black faces in media like we saw while growing up. And if by chance we feature a film that has the violent and drug abuse themes, please believe it will be done in a way to provoke thought and conversation.

What separates Project Blaq from the other companies that support or promote black indie films?

Based on our research, there is currently no platform streaming solely quality indie black content.

There is a void when it comes to supporting & promoting black indie films. Where will Project Blaq fit into filling this void?

Project Blaq will be the online hub for all black indie films & video. The #1 way to support any indie filmmaker (black or otherwise) is financially. As site traffic grows, media makers will have opportunities to monetize their content and distribute DVDs and merchandise through the e-store.

Where do you see Project Blaq in 10 years from now?

Ten years from now, Project Blaq will be proactively developing film & video projects. Indie producers and directors will have the chance to pitch concepts to our development team to secure funding and resources. We want to continue to support those who like to "color outside of the lines" so to speak. We will continue to embrace creativity and diversity of thought.

On how she met Lamar
I met him at a club. I hosted a “Welcome to Lakers" party for Ron Artest, and we met there. I was so not interested in him at the time, and I was really rude to him. He asked me to go to IHOP after the party. I went, gave him my number afterwards, and the rest is history.

On what tech gadgets they use to keep up with each other
We are huge texters. We have like four-hour conversations. We love iChat with video. We like to have fun and keep the excitement going, so sometimes we call it iBone and give each other a little show.

On how she balances personal versus public information about her
Because my family and I do reality Tv, that line is very blurred. I try to be as balanced as possible by my surroundings. Having the same childhood friends help you with that because they keep you grounded.

On the biggest misconception about her
Hmmmmm. Good question. I’m not sure, but when people meet me they normally have three things to say… 1. ‘Wow you are so tiny. You aren’t fat! Ok…’ Weird, but thanks, I guess? LOL 2. ‘OMG, you are so sweet!’ 3. ‘You aren’t that tall!’ Everyone that I meet thinks I should be 6’3” or taller. So funny, but I guess compared to Kourt and Kim I look super tall. I’m 5’10” and they are about 5’0” and 5’2,” so I do look tall. I’m really just normal and they are tiny little girls. LOL. (source)

WTF::: Memphis's Frayser High School Has 90 teen pregnancies

According to reports some 90 girls are pregnant or have already had a baby this school year at Frayser High School in Memphis. School officials are trying to find ways to prevent it but apparently these girls are making packs to have babies! Where they do that at? Apparently Memphis!

All i want to say is WHERE IN THE HELL ARE THE PARENTS?  C'mon, you can not pay me enough to believe that these young girls have guidance inside of the home. I know times have changed but they have not changed so much to where young teens don't have their own minds and abilities to understand the magnitude of something this serious. Cam Newton skipping the season & entering into the NFL Draft

Cam Newton announced that will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft after leading Auburn to a national championship. “This decision was difficult for me and my family,” Newton said, adding that he made it after talking to coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. Newton led the Tigers to their first national title since 1957 and a 14-0 season with a 22-19 victory over Oregon on Monday night. Not to go unmentioned that he won the Heisman trophy.

“It’s been a blessing for me to be a part of something so great,” he said. “Any time you win games it’s a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS national championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place that I can call home.” (source)
